From rough to smooth: The key role of tumbling technology in eyewear production
In the complex process of glasses manufacturing,
Surface treatment is particularly important.Tumbling plays a vital role. It is usually used to remove burrs, improve surface smoothness and ensure the roundness of the edge of parts.
The efficient completion of this process is directly related to the subsequent polishing of glasses and the quality of the final product.

What is Tumbling?
Tumbling is a mechanical treatment method commonly used to deburr, polish and polish the surface of workpieces. Its core principle is to put the eyeglass frame or its parts into the tumbling machine together with abrasives, chemical solutions, etc., and generate friction and interaction through rotation to remove excess materials and improve the surface finish.
In eyewear manufacturing,
Tumbling is usually used to process eyeglass frames of various materials, such as metal frames, plastic frames, acetate frames, etc.
Especially when making metal glasses, tumbling can help remove tiny burrs generated during cutting and ensure that the surface of the frame is smooth and flawless.

In the production of acetate glasses, tumbling can give its surface a more uniform gloss effect and improve the overall texture.
In the production process of plastic/Acetate frame glasses, CNC processing is followed by manual grinding and polishing, and then enters the tumbling process.According to the needs of different stages, it is usually divided into rough roller, medium roller and smooth roller, and the time of these steps will vary.
The following is the time range of each stage under normal circumstances
The following is the time range of each stage under normal circumstances
Rough roller (rough roller)
It is mainly used to remove knife marks, scratches and the roundness of the glasses frame. It usually lasts about 14-15 hours,
Medium roller (medium barrel)
Rolling pits usually takes 30 hours. This stage mainly improves the surface flatness and lays the foundation for the final polishing
Smooth roller
This is the last step of the roller process, which aims to give the surface gloss of the glasses frame. It usually takes 4 to 8 hours, depending on the required brightness effect and material type.
Different manufacturers and process standards may vary. The above is the time range of our glasses factory. And the specific time of each step may be adjusted according to different materials, equipment and processing requirements. If the finish is higher or the material is harder, the roller time may be extended accordingly.
Through this meticulous and efficient roller process, the eyeglass frames not only obtain a perfect surface gloss, but also ensure the durability and comfort of each pair of glasses.
Whether you are engaged in glass manufacturing or a consumer with high requirements for product quality, understanding the details behind the roller process will give you a deeper understanding of the eyeglass manufacturing process.
