Customized Texture Finishing for Acetate Eyewear Frames

In conventional acetate eyeglass production, the processing of the frames follows a relatively "standardized" process.

After the CNC machined eyewear frame, it typically undergoes rolling and polishing processes.

The goal is clear—to make all edges smooth, uniform, and clean.

The final result is generally: the eyeglasses frame is not rough to the touch, the edges are smooth, and both the visual appearance and tactile feel are consistent. This is the default practice in most factories and the most common presentation on the market.

However, in recent years, more and more eyewear designers have begun to move beyond this "standardized cleanliness."

During the development phase, they make more specific requests:

The eyeglasses and sunglasses designs should not be too regular; it should have variation, layering, and even a touch of artificial texture.
For example, attempts at different approaches such as beveling, lamination, and preserving textures are becoming increasingly common. In other words, the eyewear frame is no longer just a functional structure that is "processed to be smooth,"but is gradually becoming a part that can participate in design expression.

The effect shown in this image is a typical example of a customized processing method.

After completing the basic CNC machining, we didn't completely "standard polish" the frames

Instead, through subsequent process control, we deliberately preserved a certain degree of undulation and texture.

The key here isn't "polishing less," but rather more meticulous adjustments to the entire process, such as:

  • Controlling polishing time
  • Selecting the medium and barrel parameters
  • Periodic human intervention and judgment
  • Subsequent CNC detail correction and control

Through these combinations, the edges achieve a state of irregular yet controllable, textured but not overly rough.

The difficulty of this process lies in the fact that there is no fixed standard answer.Machines excel at consistency,

but this effect relies more on experience and judgment—when to stop, and to what extent it's just right.

Overdoing it results in roughness and loss of control; underdoing it reverts to a standard smoothness.

Therefore, even for the same product, each piece will have subtle differences, but the overall design language and texture are controlled in the same direction.

We currently primarily export to European and American designer brands. For details like bezel design, texture development, or structural customization, we can work together to meet your design needs. And we've always had a very successful track record with these collaborations.
If you have related projects, or are looking for a factory that can handle prototyping and developing for these kinds of "non-standard" needs on eyewear and sunglasses, please feel free to contact us.
